A longtime dream came true this weekend. I played a game of Magic: The Gathering… with my wife.
Now I should contextualize this with saying it’s not the FIRST time I’ve played MTG with my wife. So what made it different this time? She actually enjoyed it! Well, at least she said she did. To quote her directly: “I would play it again”. Sounds like a resounding endorsement to me.
See, while we played 1:1 previously, this time we played a four player variant with two of our friends called Commander. While she found playing 1:1 too competitive, it seems like she enjoyed the more casual play of this format. And that’s awesome, because I feel like I learned something about my wife in this experience
Ok ok, maybe it doesn’t seem like THAT big of a deal. It is just a card game after all. But think of the hobbies you have. Maybe you enjoy fishing, running, or watching terrible reality TV shows. When your significant other takes an interest, it makes all the difference.
It’s not just about playing a game, it’s about knowing your partner cares enough to spend their time doing something because you enjoy it. And that’s a special thing. On that note, it might be time that I indulge my wife’s addiction to RuPaul’s Drag Race.
